Introduction
Fedora 7, as we all know, is an excellent distribution, but since it only includes free software, it lacks in multimedia performance esp. in proprietary formats and codecs (mp3, DVD etc). Most of you will probably follow the instructions in the unofficial Fedora FAQ. The info that follows has been adjusted for Fedora 7 from this very FAQ. It has all been tested on my new Fedora install and works fine.
All yum commands should be executed as root or with sudo.
Add the livna repository
Use the following command to add the livna repository to your sources:
rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm
Install gstreamer plugins and ffmpeg
yum install gstreamer-plugins-ugly ffmpeg
Install xmms with mp3 support
yum install xmms xmms-mp3 xmms-skins
Install xine for DVD playback
yum install xine xine-lib libdvdcss xine-lib-extras-nonfree gxine
Install the VLC media player
yum install vlc
Replace the totem media player
Use the following commands to replace the totem media player with totem-xine:
yum remove totem totem-plparser
yum install totem-xine libdvdnav
Note: Should you choose not to install xine as described above, don't forget to install libdvdcss separately otherwise you will not be able to playback most commercial DVDs.
Install mplayer, the GUI and the mozilla plugin
yum install mplayer mplayer-gui mplayerplug-in
Finally install amarok
Optionally install amarok. Amarok is a superb program, but be aware that is KDE based, and if you are running GNOME it will also install KDE dependencies (kdelibs)
yum install amarok amarok-extras-nonfree
This concludes the multimedia installation, have fun with you new fedora system.
