Please allow me update this by saying that you may consider install it in partition instead of MBR if you later:
1. possibly re-install Windows (MBR will be updated after a windows installation, then you will lost installed linux unless you resort to rescue disc)
2. possibly try something new, say replace Windows with OS/2, which will update MBR too
a disk has up to 4 primary partitions (expand partition will take one primary partition place). make sure you have the partition where you install the boot sector to be bootable, which can be done during installation or manually by fdisk. i.e: # fdisk -l /dev/sda
