as laser technology has advanced so too have the techniques applied to patients. this is particularly true for cosmetic lasers in the field of dermatology where there is a high demand for skin rejuvenation. medical laser treatment provides a non-invasive solution to cosmetic symptoms that many people experience.
there are two primary methods of medical laser treatment that are used in dermatological practice. these are ablative and non-ablative laser treatments.
ablative - also known as laser peel or resurfacing is a type of laser treatment where the very outer layers of skin are destroyed. this causes the body to produce collagen during the healing process which results in the skin looking younger and tighter.
the upside to ablative laser treatment is that it is very precise and creates less discomfort when compared to other resurfacing methods like dermabrasion. there is more than one laser that can accomplish this. the carbon dioxide laser is one of them, although it can produce longer recovery times. erbium: yag lasers such as those produced by aerolase have a reputation for providing great results in patients with minimal recovery time and are often combined with other lasers to maximize effectiveness in treatment while keeping recovery times short. ablative lasers can treat large pores, spots, wrinkles, scars, cutaneous lesions, age spots, sun damage, solar lentigos and more.
non-ablative - refers to lasers that don't remove the epidermal layer to treat various skin abnormalities. non-ablative lasers improve skin texture and surface irregularities and have significantly less recovery time for the patient, which makes it an appealing solution to both physicians and their patients.
advances in non-ablative laser technology can be seen in devices like the light pod neo where laser exposure times are up to 50 times shorter than previous models. this means that less of the laser energy is being delivered to tissues that don't need it while still supplying the intended layers of skin with sufficient treatment. by targeting the dermal layer beneath the epidermis, stimulation of fibroblasts and collagen formation is able to take place that allows skin rejuvenation without the external scarring.
the progression of both these treatments has allowed many to seek out and remedy various skin conditions. as laser technology advances, bimodal methods of treatment that combine both cosmetic lasers are being used to give patients the optimal benefit of a holistic skin procedure with minimal recovery times and maximum results.
